And like Printopia, it does not require you to install an iOS app. It looks very similar to Printopia, with an on/off switch on the left and a pane on the right showing the available printers.

So I'm looking for suggestions, if there are any - or validation that this just isn't going to happen.AirPrint Activator is a free download, although the developer politely asks for a small donation, making it a much more inexpensive option than the $20 Printopia. I also tried Netgear's Genie app, which according to their press release makes "any USB printer AirPrint-compatible." Apparently they don't mean AirPrint, Apple's printing architecture which allows you to discover and print to wireless printers without installing any drivers, because it only works after installing the printer on a PC, which has to be turned on to act as a print server in order to print. Or just confirm that it's a lost cause - honestly, either would be helpful! I can't buy every single printing app just to see if it works, so I'm hoping someone can offer some suggestions.

None of the apps allow you to discover the printer from within another app (like AirPrint), most of them require a PC or Mac to act as a print server, and they print a jumbled mess of nonsense when they do print.

Here's what I've tried so far: I bought an AirPort Express, plugged our Star TSP 800 II in to that via USB, and tried a half dozen trial printing apps. All the major thermal printer manufacturers have SDK's, which you can use to integrate printing functions in to your own app, but we don't have the engineering resources right now to tackle something like that. To be frank, I need an AirPrint-enabled thermal printer, but at the moment that does not appear to exist. I need to print to a thermal printer (4" receipt printer) from within an existing app on an iPad, without a computer acting as print server. I don't think there is a solution, but I might as well throw the question out there for you folks, in case someone has some useful tips or advice to offer. I've been researching this for work and I've hit a brick wall. I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this.maybe r/ipad?
